CFM vs. Vacuum Depth: The Spoilboard Equation
Machinists often ask: "Why does my part slip when my vacuum pump motor is 10 HP?" The answer lies in understanding porous material permeability versus surface area sealing.
When routing porous sheet goods such as MDF, LDF, or raw particleboard, air passes directly through the body of the material. A pump with inadequate flow capacity (CFM) will drop vacuum pressure instantly as toolpaths breach the board perimeter, leading to catastrophic part movement during aggressive cutter passes.
Holding Force (lbs) = Surface Area (sq. in.) × Pressure Differential (PSI)
Where 1 in. Hg ≈ 0.491 PSI.
At full vacuum (28 in. Hg ≈ 13.7 PSI), a 12" x 12" piece experiences up to 1,972 lbs of vertical clamping pressure!
