Understanding Beam Quality (M² Factor), Focal Length, and Kerf Dimensions
The core factor governing precision cut speed and edge taper on a CO2 CNC laser cutter is beam quality, measured by the M² factor (where M² = 1.0 represents a theoretical fundamental Gaussian beam). High-grade CO2 laser sources used by Techno CNC Systems achieve M² values < 1.2, resulting in a tightly concentrated optical focal point.
When selecting your machine lens setup, trade-offs between focal length and depth of field must be calculated based on your target stock thickness:
- 1.5 Inch Focal Length Lens: Spot diameter ~0.075 mm. Ideal for high-definition raster engraving (>1000 DPI) and micro-thin film cutting (<2 mm). Short depth of focus.
- 2.5 Inch Focal Length Lens: Spot diameter ~0.127 mm. Standard multi-purpose lens balancing raster detail with clean vector cutting up to 10 mm acrylic and 8 mm timber.
- 4.0 Inch Focal Length Lens: Spot diameter ~0.254 mm. Extended focal depth maintaining straight, vertical edge profiles on thick 15 mm – 25 mm acrylics and heavy wood blocks with minimal kerf taper.
