Calculating Target Chip Loads for Industrial Tooling
Industrial CNC router bits perform best when cutting distinct chips rather than grinding material into fine dust. Proper chip volume extracts cutting heat away from the tool's carbide matrix, preserving edge sharpness and preventing localized thermal breakdown.
The Core Mathematical Formula:
Chip Load (Inches Per Tooth) = Feed Rate (IPM) / [Spindle RPM x Number of Flutes]
- Undercutting (Too small chip load): Creates micro-friction, rapid heat accumulation, blade blunting, and edge burn marks on wood/acrylic.
- Overloading (Too large chip load): Exceeds transverse rupture strength of the carbide shank, resulting in deflection, tool chatter, and catastrophic snapping.
- Optimal Target Parameters: Maintaining 0.018”–0.024” chip load for 1/2” compression cutters in double-sided melamine ensures maximum feed rates with pristine finish quality.
